Book 1: Missing Angel; Part 8 END
“…I already know all this stuff. I’m not interested in my parents.” He replied, ignoring the shocked looks. “It’s for the best if I don’t think about it.”
Fang nodded solemnly. He had some thoughts on some of this, and decided he would talk to Digi later and hopefully get some sort of thoughts.
Fang had parents, an address, and pictures. A report as of last year said they were still alive. His mother had his dark hair, his olivey-tan skin, and she was beautiful. Her hair was done in braids, and she was wearing a form of formal attire, with feathers, beads, and lots of handmade jewelry. He thought for a moment and realized she was Native American. His father was Mexican. The documents said he was modified before birth, and he didn’t know how to feel until he read that they went to a hospital that did this to him without his mother’s consent.
Nudge too, a sweet looking black couple, the woman’s hair in long locs, down to her back, and her father was bald, but no updates on them aside from their last known location in Arizona. It said she was modified after birth, and it made her heart hurt to know that she had been taken away from them so soon.
Gazzy and Angel’s parents had an address too, but instead of a nice happy couple they had two worn adults. A woman with hair similar to Angel, but thinner and not as bouncy. A man with a gaunt face and eyes like Gazzy. Their file read ‘former experiments, released.’ It saddened them deeply, but they were glad that now they had a reason as to why. Their parents had to make a choice. Keep their children, or get their freedom. Gazzy wouldn’t make the same choice, but he guesses he understands why they did what they did. They were born normal, and modified after birth.
Iggy had a mother, and a stepfather who she married while pregnant. No address, stepfather was military so they moved constantly. Gazzy described pictures of a woman who looked just like him, tall, thin, strawberry blonde. Him and Fang compared and realized that their mothers went to a similar branch of hospitals, and they were modified into mutants without consent.
The only person who didn’t have any info was Max, and Digi who’d ripped his up before anyone could read it properly.
“All of our addresses aside from mine are in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C, that’s all kinda close together right?” Nudge said. “D.C is where the government is too.”
“This is way cool!” Iggy said, practically shaking with excitement. He had a mother, and a stepfather!
“So…what are we gonna do?” Gazzy said, suddenly serious and thinking.
“I wanna do whatever Max does. So do Celeste and Total.”
“Hmm… We go to D.C, take baths, and start tracking our parents down.” Max said definitively.
That earned some whoops and cheers, and the flock did their fist stacking thing and started getting ready to sleep.
Fang pulled Max and Digi aside, away from the rest. “So…we gonna talk about the big thing bothering me about all this?”
“What do you mean?”
“…Angel lied to us. Remember what she said earlier? About our parents?”
Max paused, eyes widening in realization. “…Maybe she just heard rumors? I doubt those white coats actually knew our pasts.”
“But details as specific as that? Something isn’t right, and I’m starting to think she knows a lot more than she lets on.” He said, jaw tightening. “Same with you.” He looked towards Digi. “What exactly did you remember?”
“…I remembered them doing drug trials on me. I inherited natural extreme drug resistance from my folks, so if anything worked on me, it would work on you guys too.” Digi replied. “They were testing mind control drugs on me. It’s how they made me think the school was fine, how they stopped me from fighting back.”
“So Angel may not be lying… what if they gave her those drugs?” Max suggested. “Let’s keep this between the three of us, and keep a close eye on Angel.”
The next morning, they were flying out to D.C, unaware of the things ahead. But for now, they were free and happy bird kids.
